MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFE TIME

It is a time of JOY when our grown up children, with children of their own, choose to celebrate traditions formed in their childhood.  One in particular originates in Sweden
Here is our story
Lucia, Child of Light, Sweden's beautiful Christmas tide celebration.
Santa Lucia Day holds for our family a true place in our hearts and family traditions. Grandmother Mimi Sorensen's ancestors came from Sweden. And perhaps that is one reason why this special day is loved by our family. Celebrated in Sweden on December 13th (and in many homes around the worl,) this is a day of honor and remembrance of a young woman, who was said to be born 300 years after the death of Jesus Christ. It is a story of truth, legend and mystery.

For our family, it provides us an unique opportunity to create our own family tradition.
Early in the morning mom would awaken Mindy, dress her in a long white dress with a red sash. On her head was placed a wreath of candles. Real candles were used until melted wax was a bit of nuisance. Carrying a tray of buns, our Santa Lucia would awaken her brothers and sisters. They would put on their cone shaped hats decorated with stars, paint and glitter and wear pastel colored gowns. Each was given a lit candle to care over.
This was a MAGICAL moment.
Mindy would lead the little blurry-eyed troup about the upstairs hall into dad's bedroom. Sweet voices singing, each would hold a candle and hoping that wax wouldn't drip onto their fingers, they sang their daddy awake.
Dad would wake up to the surprise and join them.
The Second Magical Moment

Slowly, carefully, our little family would wind through our festively decorated home, which for some strange reason was lit only with candles and soft Christmas lights that gave off halos.
Before each of our lovely Christmas decorations: the creche holding baby Jesus, the dancing music boxes, the hand painted wooden crate that held Advent surprises, the fireplace with its faux manger scene complete with baby Jesus laying on real straw, the Swedish goat and tomptes, and the dining room table set with blue and white china, and dishes of delectable foods, by each of these lovely areas we would sing a joyful Christmas carol.
We SANG our way through our Magical Home
...and we hoped nothing would catch on fire.

Each Santa Lucia Celebration was culminated with a wonderful breakfast of sausage, bacon and Swedish Oven Pancakes, hot chocolate and marshmallows...oh, and whipping cream and fresh berries piled on top of the pancake.

One Year I painted the tile (shown at the top) for each family.  However, the original recipe  comes from a 1974 Sunset cookbook, Scandinavian Cook Book. Seeing is believing...the condition of this book is a testament of sorts, to how often we made these oven pancakes.  In fact we had them last week to celebrate our daughter's birthday.

Santa Lucia Day

Last year I recall writing a blog chatting on about Santa Lucia Day and the  sheer fun of this family tradition in our family as they grew up. Time creeps up and the inevitable becomes reality. The traditional baton has now been passed down from our children to theirs. It makes my heart cheer!

Authentically Santa Lucia Day is celebrated before dawn, when the world is quiet,  the sky is dark and all are asleep. But with LITTLES in one's family, ingenuity is often the key to success.

Such as last night when we enjoyed a fun "Santa Lucia" breakfast-dinner.

Funny Bunny didn't let a seriously slipping crown of leaves and candles deter her from eating her nummy Swedish Oven Pancake. First she doused it in pillowing pillows of whipping cream; topped with her mom's homemade raspberry sauce; pushed her crown up and licked the top off...hmmm not sure the pancake is quite as good as raspberries and whipping cream, but it was eaten with gusto nevertheless.

Decades of holidays have passed since I painted each of the FIVE BIGGIE KIDS in the family their own tile, with original recipe in BIG letters.
Swedish Oven Pancake
Each year I anticipate a frantic phone call from at least one of them, "MOM! help, I can't find my  recipe  can you PUHHHHLEASE send me a copy?"

Sure enough yesterday I was wandering in World Market, which in itself is a yummy place to be at holiday season, the phone rang LOUD (forgot to turn off) and  _____ called with THE REQUEST!!!  Love it!!! Wonder who it will be next year.  We haven't missed a year yet.

Private Party

It just doesn't seem right
for a birthday to not start EARLY
as in "wee morning hours!"
After all it is a 365 day trek to hitch another year in one's
BIRTHDAY BELT.
The sun rose on a sacrosanct FURNER TRADITION....
a delightfully, puffy, bouffant, eggy, cardamon-laced
SWEDISH OVEN PANCAKE.
The BIRTHDAY BOY was ready for the party to begin...
another fully laden table with S.O.P., whip cream, jam and syrup,
fruit, juice, eggs to individual taste
and lots of crispy sausage.
HMMM somehow on this morning the sausage was missing its casing!!!!
Never matter, let the FEAST begin.
Please hurry with the picture taking so we can "dig" into those piping hot
Swedish Oven Pancakes!!!
Claudann joined the early morning celebration.
She brought with her a very fun present for the BIRTHDAY BOY,
a standing cot with blow up mattress.
Don't want our favorite GUY sleeping on the ground.
~~Really Grammy will you please put down the camera? We are
STARVING~~
After every little smidgeon of Swedish Oven Pancake was consumed,
everyone gathered in the living room for
the GRAND OPENING of special presents!
Remember those HIDDEN ELVES from the surprise party,
well they popped up again...
this time bringing a GAME of HANG MAN....
With Adam and Emily's help the BIRTHDAY BOY had to guess the words
describing HIS gift from the mischievious elves.
HE went through quite a few letters, repeating some,
wearing a perplexed expression
as he dug harder to figure out the words.
"OH, MY GOSH.....I GOT IT!" HE finally exclaimed. Elves are tricky people and these clever ELVES
knew what he had secretly been longing for.....
A TRAILER HITCH!!!!
HIS mom painted a special canvas to remind HIM of HIS
wonderful trip to FRANCE
and the wonderful shoreline of Cassis.
Cassis a sun drenched village, cradling hundreds
of boats with multi-colored sails.
SANDI saved her GIFT for LAST.
Think of the
BIGGEST SMILE
you can imagine.
That was on HIS face when HE opened a gift
for a weekend at an Austrian hotel
and
a SEAFOOD BUFFET!
The Birthday Boy's feet left the floor with JOY!
Now isn't that what you would expect from
CHRISTOPHER
